MEY

Mey’s legs were starting to cramp.

She’d been sitting in the lotus position for hours, listening to so many echoes that the stories had all become a big blur in her mind and her concentration was wavering. Letting go for a few moments to rest, she allowed her thoughts to wander.

Those echoes might have been irrelevant to her investigation, but they had been very relevant to those who’d lived them, and they made Mey melancholy.

Or maybe it was just exhaustion weighing her down.

She’d pushed herself hard, keeping her focus for longer than ever before, but nothing important had come up.

Mey hated thinking of the life stories she’d witnessed as unimportant. She was in a unique position to witness people’s life dramas, big and small, and she wished she could record them in some way, immortalize the people who had lived them.

Mey supposed that was why Toven wrote about his lovers in his journals. It was the only way he could immortalize those mortal women who’d left a positive impression on him.

Human life was so depressingly fleeting.

Which reminded her that she should visit her parents, and she should do that soon. They weren’t getting any younger, and both of their daughters were living abroad.

Talk about guilt.

They had adopted two girls, hoping to one day enjoy grandchildren who would come to visit, and who would spend the holidays with them. They hadn’t banked on those girls turning immortal and becoming practically infertile.

She and Yamanu had been faithfully following Merlin’s protocol, drinking the vile potions every morning, keeping positive attitudes, avoiding stress…

Yeah, right. Chasing Kra-ell phantoms shouldn’t have been stressful, but the circumstances in which they’d disappeared were anxiety-inducing.

With a sigh, she opened her eyes, unfolded her legs, and pushed up to her feet. She was too tired to continue, and there was too much on her mind. She wouldn’t be able to reach the meditative state again unless she rested properly and put something in her belly. But the best way to chase away the blues was to make love to her mate.

Heck, just being around Yamanu was a mood booster. He had such an upbeat personality that it was impossible to stay down with him being so up. No wonder the girls in the halfway house loved him and his karaoke nights, which he’d missed out on lately because of the two missions.

It was time to go home.

When she opened the door, Yamanu gave her a pitying smile. “No luck, eh?”

“I think Vrog is right. I’ve been sitting there for hours, and I’ve only seen that one echo of Jade and Kagra’s fight. All the other ones were created by humans.”

“He’ll be glad to hear that. The guy is itching to get to that hybrid female, and I can’t blame him. If I were him, the moment I heard about her, I would have been on the first flight leaving for Lugu Lake.”

“I want to try the laundry again when they close for the day. That’s the only place I didn’t spend much time in yet.
